My husband’s day is completely separate from mine from about 6:00am until 5:30pm. We rarely chat on the phone and each of us are crazy-busy in our own jobs. His happens to be working at his family’s business while mine is shuttling kids around and making sure they are fed and safe. We both rarely have down time! Sometimes my days go by so quickly and I’m so busy that I realize at 4:30pm I haven’t heard from my husband all day long. I get cranky. Sometimes I pout a little bit. And then I remember that I also have a phone and a car and a brain and can get ahold of him somehow if I want, too.
Here are 5 things you can do every day so your mate knows you’re thinking of them:
1. Selfie it up.
You guys, selfies are not just for high school kids who are begging people to pay them compliments! They aren’t weird or stupid or immature. Selfies are completely appropriate to take and send to your husband (or wife. or boyfriend. or girlfriend… but for the sake of this article, we’ll stick with husband). Take it randomly wherever you are. Are you at Starbucks buying your 3rd vanilla latte of the day (don’t judge)? Duck face right in line. I bet he’ll laugh. Waiting to pick up your son from soccer practice? Send a selfie of yourself pretending to be a teammate. Do something funny and embarrassing. Use an app like A Beautiful Mess to add doodles and/or text.
2. Buy him a coffee in the morning.
Or maybe a cake pop or scone from his favorite coffee stand. A milkshake at his favorite lunch spot. If you know he has a ‘regular’ place, surprise him with a treat! Get there before he does and leave a little note. I’ve never run into an employee who minds doing this. He will not only be surprised, but will probably think it’s the sweetest thing, too. And, let’s face it, we all want to be thought of as super sweet.
3. Send him a hilarious meme.
Okay, I cannot be the only one who laughs at the most ridiculous memes on the internet, right? Find one that speaks to an inside joke the 2 of you share. I would be surprised if you couldn’t find one. My husband and I are always laughing about how ‘milk drunk’ our babies get after I nurse them (oh, the things we find funny now).
4. Slip a note in his pants pocket so at some point throughout the day he’ll find it.
I’m not the sexy type (I honestly don’t think I’d even know where to start when it came to writing a sexy note), so my note would probably be something like, “I’m making pizza for dinner and I got your favorite beer!” (Totally not sexy.) But something he’d love! Write whatever you want. Make it funny, exciting, sexy, cute, sweet, whatever.
5. Sync up your iphones and download apps or songs you think he’d love.
I know this might not be possible for everyone, so maybe instead, make him a mix-tape of his favorite songs. Steal his phone the night before and download a fun game. There are a million free ones available so it doesn’t have to be expensive! My husband’s phone and my phone are under the same iTunes account so anything he downloads, it syncs to my phone and vice versa. It’s kind of fun to get on my phone and see what he’s been doing all day — beer brewing apps?! Working hard….
I have found that if I’m a little cranky during the day, it’s easy for me to take it out on my husband when he gets home from work. I pull the, “Well you haven’t been taking care of kids all day!” line. I’ve also found that it’s a lot harder to act like this if I’ve been thinking of him throughout the day and we’ve been laughing together. Not only does it make his day a little happier, it makes mine happier and easier, too!
